Today I had my first colonoscopy. I'd been having some issues and my physician recommended getting them checked out.
Yesterday, I began my clear-liquid diet. I was so hungry all day at work, and all the snacks in the break room didn't help. Mom reminded me that once I arrived home, I would start taking the laxatives (blech). I arrived home, and took the pill laxatives and continued to drink my water and apple juice. An hour later, I starting drinking the miralax-laced orange Gatorade at 15min intervals. I hung out on the couch with my mom, waiting for the medicine to hit me, and around 8pm it went into full effect. Every 20 or so minutes I had to run to the restroom, and I did not like it one bit. After waking up a few times throughout the night, my alarm went off at 5am to drink the magnesium citrate. Gag me!
Flash forward 5.5hrs, Mom and I checked in at the hospital, and waited for Dad to meet us out front. The doctor was running about 20min behind schedule, so we three took a nice long walk outside in the 48 degree weather. Once they took me back, I changed into the gown and fuzzy socks, and then they attempted to put in the IV. It took two nurses to finally get it in, I guess my veins just don't enjoy being stuck by needles.
Once I was on the bed and waiting for the doctor to begin the procedure, they gave me the relaxing meds and I immediately felt the effects. My body suddenly felt very heavy, almost as if my arms and legs were all falling asleep at the same time. They turned out the lights and gave me the sedative.
I remember looking at the clock, it said 1:05pm. Then, I was in recovery, and the clock said 2:10pm.
It was over.
My parents were sitting next to me, and the doctor read his report; everything was fine, no polups, no blockages, but some slight inflammation. They'd taken small biopsies of the two inflamed areas, and they'll get me the results in a week or two.
Dad brought me home while Mom went to get my meal request (Sweet Pork Barbacoa Quesadilla from Cafe Rio), and I got settled in on the couch downstairs with a glass of water and bowl of saltines.
After a short nap and a few episodes of Sex & the City, Erica came by with a plate of pink-frosted cupcakes. I am doing all I can to not eat absolutely everything in the pantry, but I know that I'll be back to normal by tomorrow, and hoping the laxatives will have worn off before I leave for work. But everything is fine, and I won't need another colonoscopy for at least another 20-30 years.
