Christmas 2015

Christmas this year was definitely different. For the last 10 years, we've had Christmas brunch at the Dunn house. This year, the Dunns couldn't host because they moved to DC! So Mom offered to host breakfast at her house, to which we all arrived shortly after noon on Christmas Day.

Cookie Exchange and the Tree of Life

First of all, the kids are home for Christmas!!!!!! YAY!! :)

Second, we were invited to a cookie exchange at Nichole's Aunt Peeches house on Sunday, so we made some cake-mix cookies for the occasion. Even Grandpa made it to the festivities.

In light of the rivalry game, Max and Kate made gingerbread men with the red block U on them.

They also made a special Y cookie just for Sam. He almost cried because of its thoughtfulness (especially since he's the only BYU fan of the bunch).

It was quite the party! I've often wondered what big family holiday celebrations look like, and this was what I always imagined it looking like. A big house full of kids running around, tons of delicious food, and enough holiday spirit to single-handedly power Santa's sleigh. We had to duck out before charades began because we needed to be in Daybreak by 5pm for dinner with Sam's cousins.

After dinner, we decided to stop at Draper City Park to see the Tree of Life.

The Sam-Effect

Ever since Sam and I started dating, my grades have gotten better every semester. While I continue to work my butt off, I do give him some credit for helping me keep myself in check emotionally. Here is a timeline of graduate school compared to my time with him:

Fall 2014 (A, A, and B) We had our first date near the end of the semester.

Spring 2015 (A and A-) We became a couple a week after the semester began, and got engaged a week after the semester ended.

Summer 2015 (A and A) Wedding planning was in full-swing, and we got married 4 days after my final presentation.

Fall 2015 (A and A) Grades are officially in and we've been married just shy of 6 months.

We're happily looking toward the future (graduation, house-hunting, babies, etc.) and I'm back-flipping around campus because this semester was SO challenging. I've spent so many hours writing the first three chapters of my thesis, and I'm over the moon that now it's time to go into the field and conduct my own research.

I have so much to be grateful for, especially being so close to my Master's degree and having the most supportive husband ever!

So, if you want to improve your grades, I suggest having a Sam in your life (just remember that all Sam's are NOT created equal).

All hail the Sam-Effect (and hard work, don't forget that!).

Hanukkah

In addition to Christmas this year, I insisted we celebrate Hanukkah due to my Jewish roots and desire to teach our future kids about their heritage. This year, Hanukkah runs from December 6-14, and we decided that we would observe all eight nights, and do presents and other festivities on the 8th night.

Sam got handkerchiefs with 'S' embroidered on them, and I got some new socks :)

The Friday of Hanukkah (the 11th), we went to dinner with Bob & Lisa (who were in town for a quick visit) and my parents. It was my family birthday dinner, so I picked the Desert Edge Brewery (aka The Pub). It is my parents' special place because that's where they had their first date. Even Tyler managed to make it.

On Sunday, Mom and I went to the Hanukkah celebration at the Gallivan Center and then to see the lights on temple square. Rabbi Zippel was leading the festivities (he knew my Bubby, and even performed the services at her graveside), and wasting no time singing EVERYTHING as he lit the lights. It was a great party.

I'm so happy that Sam was willing to observe Hanukkah with me, it meant a lot to me. Maybe next year we will actually buy our own menorah (Target has them, btw).

As the year is drawing the a close, I realize that there is SO much positivity in my life, and I'm so grateful for all my many blessings. I truly believe that this next year will be even better. Although, I don't think much could top marrying the love of your life and writing the first 3 of 5 chapters of your Master's Thesis.

26 yrs and Counting

Yesterday was the day I entered the world, 26 years ago.

Last year on my birthday I was with my eventual husband at our Ward Christmas Auction FHE. I picked him up and we headed to the activity, as friends. After all, we'd only gone on two dates. He wasn't my boyfriend or anything, but he was good company.

I had just finished my first semester of the MACL program, and my cohort brought a small birthday cake to class just for me. I celebrated my birthday by having a painting party at the Paint Mixer.

I still can't believe that was a year ago.

Here we are, married five months and still so happy just being around one another. How did I get so lucky?

We had dinner at my favorite restaurant with Meredith to celebrate, and I couldn't think of a better way to end my special day.

As I look back on this time last year, I can't believe that I missed the one thing I had been wishing for. Sam was in my life, and I was too chicken to let him play a larger role. Good thing I came to my sense five weeks later and took him off the market! Having him in my life is the best gift I've ever received.

Sam gave me these gorgeous rose gold flower earrings.

Best birthday so far!

Baptism, Birthday, and a Baby Blessing

It was quite the eventful weekend for me. Saturday morning was my friend Livvy's baptism. So, I woke up early so that I exercise and still get there on time. It was beautiful. I love this sweet girl, and I faced the possibility of missing her baptism because me car battery died the day before. Nevertheless, I made it, and I'm so happy I did!

Me and Livvy

Her brothers, Jordan and Dylan

It was also Ian's 24th birthday on Saturday, so Sam and I took him to lunch. Ian wanted to go to Sizzler, so we met up and had steak and chicken lunches. Can't believe this punk is 24, it seems like just yesterday we were kids and he followed me everywhere. At least he was obedient ;)

Finally, Baby Addison was blessed on Sunday, so I went to Adam and Beth's ward for Sacrament. I hate to admit it, but I cried twice. Once during the actual blessing, and again when Beth gave her testimony. It was a very emotionally moving weekend.

Thanksgiving with the Elmers

We had Thanksgiving with Sam's family this year and spent a few days away from the cold temps with the Elmers in Arizona. Sam's mom hosted, and I was in charge of the sweet potato casserole. Close to 30 people showed up armed with side dishes, and we had quite a feast.

I got a lovely surprise when the kids called me and we Facetimed for a little bit. They were in New York and actually got to be at the Macy's day parade.

While we were in AZ, I got to go shopping with Lisa (Sam's mom) and Alexa (Sam's future sister-in-law), played a few rounds at Topgolf, and just have some quality family time. We had a lot of fun, and will be heading back in January for Jake and Alexa's wedding.

BYU Football Game

Many of you know that Sam is a BYU-alum, and that he loves him some cougar football. Being the supportive wife I am, I agreed to go to a football game with him. So we went to the BYU game this weekend for our date night.

We headed down to Provo around 11am so that we could grab some lunch and go to the BYU bookstore. Sam bought me an awesome grey BYU jacket as an early Christmas present, and I absolutely love it!

The Cougars were playing the Fresno State Bulldogs, and even though the Bulldogs scored first, the Cougars came back with a vengeance.

Apparently it was a blow-out at 10-52. Sam was ecstatic! He sure loves those cougars.

On the way home, we stopped at JCW burgers at Thanksgiving Point for some dinner, where they brought me chicken strips as large as my entire hand! Boy were we beat after walking across campus and then up to the nosebleed seats and back.

Gratitude List

November is the time of year where I notice lots of people on Facebook sharing a daily gratitude. Honestly, I'd rather compile a master list so that I don't forget what I've said. Here is just a short list of things I am grateful for right this second. I'm sure I could post something everyday, but there are far too many to choose just one.

Things I am grateful for:

1-Sam, the best husband I ever could have imagined.

2-Mine and Sam's health, and how we are working together to be healthier.

3-Max & Kate, the sweetest most loyal little cousins ever!

4-My parents, always there when I need them.

5-My in-laws, so full of love and compassion.

6-Being able to take family names to the temple, especially because we go through as couples most of the time too.

7-The actual temple! We've grown accustomed to our weekly temple-dates.

8-My car, especially because I paid it off this year!

9-My brothers, annoying 80% of the time but not too bad overall.

10-My crockpot, and all the delicious things I can make with it.

11-Studio C sketches, because laughter is the heart of our home.

12-Meredith, who always has words of wisdom.

13-Victoria, who loves me no matter what.

14-Bryce, the best "big brother" ever.

15-Adam, who reminds me to enjoy the simplicity of life.

16-Therapists who helped me recover from the majority of traumatic events in my life.

17-Hot Chocolate, need I say more?

18-My friends from Rose Park, coming home never felt so good at times.

19-Job duties I am good at and enjoy.

20-Ibuprofen 800, for those days when the physical pain is rough.

21-Disney movies, because it's okay to love a happy ending.

22-The SHAKE IT playlist on my iPod, because you need a soundtrack to dance like no one is watching.

23-My friends from Hillside YSA

24-My friends from Forrest Dale 1st

25-That physical things can be replaced, and how to appreciate the things that are irreplaceable.

26-Chocolate protein powder, gotta love those killer protein shakes!

27-Cans of pureed pumpkin, because pumpkin bread, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin cookies, and pumpkin pie protein shakes.

28-Bubble baths, because relaxation is a right and not a privilege

29-The ability to tame my hair after 25 years, thank you curl lotion, diffuser, and bobby pins.

30-My phenomenal ability to stay organized.

There are many individuals who aren't on this list who I am incredibly grateful for, so here is the acknowledgment that you all deserve: I wouldn't be who I am today without your love, support, guidance, and strengths by association. I love you all!

Happy Gratitude Month!

Squash the Negative

I've spent the majority of my twenties holding onto the bad part of my past (people who hurt me, mistakes I made, etc.), so much so that I was letting it remain a part of me when it needed to be cast off. Why was I still holding onto these bad things? Why was I continuing to let certain things have power of my emotions?

The answer was simple; I didn't like who I was back then, and holding onto these things was a fantastic way to displace my dissatisfaction so I could be angry at everyone else but me. Realize this on a random day last week rocked my world, so much so that I absolutely had to tell Bryce at our dinner party. I was at fault for allowing the negativity to be part of me, when it does not deserve a place in my body, mind, or spirit.

So, my form of treatment to remove the negativity cancer is modeled after how most cancer treatments go. Prevent it from growing, shrink it, and cut it out. With this in mind, I began looking at some of my options to remove the negativity.

First up, exercise and diet modification. It's not that Sam & I eat bad food, we just aren't eating enough of the good stuff. Now that we have food-prep-Sunday, our refrigerator is filled with produce, eggs, meaty proteins, and dairy foods. I also started doing the 21-day-fix workouts in the morning, so now I wake up at 6am to do my 30min workout before I jump into the nice warm shower. Honestly, it's only been three days but I can't remember the last time I felt this good.

Second, a daily emotional check-in with my sweetheart. Knowing that I only have a 5min window to complain everyday has really shown me that I have more positive than negative stuff happening in my day-to-day activities. Sam is super helpful with not letting me dwell on negative issues, if anything, he has helped stop me from even bringing it up because most of it won't be an issue tomorrow!

Third, relieving the intense pressure I've grown accustomed to putting on myself. I've gotten SO much better about work, but school is the real kicker. Currently, my grade in my Capstone (Thesis) class dropped to 95.1%. Keep in mind that 95%+ is an A, while 90-94% is an A-. I still need to have my final proposal graded.

I started to panic because I no longer had a grade buffer, and the idea of getting anything less than an A seemed like a step backward (my grades have gone up every single semester, and I didn't want my straight-A streak to be tainted). I had to give myself a reality check, and admit that an A- would suffice if it came to that. I actually have to work really hard in school, but people say I make it look easy (I promise you, it's just because I'm organized that you think I've got it all together) and that adds on more pressure.

I've been doing yoga all semester to keep myself in check, and now I've also started taking hot baths to help me relax. Cooking has also helped a lot; I enjoy the process of creating something delicious. Plus, it's like I'm rewarding myself when I have hot, healthy, yummy food to eat throughout the day.

Fourth and finally, putting more faith into my life. As part of our new morning routine, Sam & I have been reading the Book of Mormon together. We read a chapter a day, and then talk about what stood out to us before we pray together (I pray in the morning, he prays at night). I'm learning to trust the universe a little bit more, and I think I feel more at peace.

In the meantime, only three more weeks until the end of the semester!

Three-Musketeers Dinner Party

We finally had our second Three-Musketeers Dinner Party! Our first one was at Adam & Beth's back at the end of the summer, and now it was our turn. Bryce & Katherine get to host next.

We served lasagna and chocolate lava cake, while A&B brought drinks (and baby Addison, so we could meet him!), while B&K came bearing garlic bread and salad.

I even made pumpkin muffins in case anyone wanted a non-chocolate dessert.

The crock-pot lava cake!

Addison is SO little, and boy is he a cutie.

After dessert B&K headed out, but A&B stuck around to play a round of Yahtzee (Beth won, btw). It was definitely worth the nearly month-long wait to finally make it happen. I'm thinking that next time we host, I want to make something yummy from scratch. I never thought I would enjoy cooking so much, maybe because I like working with my hands, and after you finish cooking something, you have something to show for your efforts :)

We had so much fun with my friends, and I'm super grateful that I have good friends and we can have times like this together.

Submitting the IRB Proposal

Let it be know that on this day, November 5, 2015 at 10:47am, I finished writing my IRB proposal. Let it also be known that at 10:59 it was officially submitted.

For the last few weeks, this proposal has been like my child (both the love of my life and the bane of my existence). I've been doing all I can to help it grow and develop properly, that it was honest, to the point, and authentic. Most of all, it has a purpose.

Anyway, after almost 12 hours of copy and paste, writing consent and assent forms, perfecting interview questions, and anticipating ethical considerations, I converted my finished product from word to pdf and emailed it to the dean.

I feel so great right now, and I'm confident that I will be able to get out into the field to gather my data soon.

This has been a challenging road to walk, especially with the overwhelming sense of negativity that some people have thrown my way since the semester started. But I'd like to thank my ever-cheerful and laid-back husband for helping my through my academic meltdowns.

Let the countdown to the end of class begin! (5 weeks)

Halloween Weekend

Our First Halloween together! We went a party that one of Sam's chemist friends was hosting in Layton, and we had a blast! We decided to go as a Kindergarten Couple. Boy we were adorable.

Then on Sunday, my family came over for dinner. We had soup bowls and cookies and then we played Yahtzee. Mom won, in case you were wondering, but Dad and I were the only ones to roll Yahtzees.
